Costa Rica Flag Football TournamentPUERTO VIEJO, COSTA RICA | AUG. 5 - 11, 2018

Join us in playing against a select group of youth from Puerto Viejo in the heart of Costa Rica!

Fumble in the jungle — Participants in this event will meet in San Jose before heading to the small beach community of Puerto Viejo along the border with Panama, stopping to white water raft along the way.  Once in Puerto Viejo, you’ll be introduced to your new friends who make up team Costa Rica.  A few months ago they didn’t know too much about flag football, but they’ve already started training and most close observers see a force to be reckoned with.  When not playing football, these new friends will be your guides – showing you the best places to see and how to fish and more generally helping you immerse yourself in everything the community has to offer.

About the event

Fumble in the Jungle is a cross-cultural sporting exchange between the people of Costa Rica and international participants.  Costa Rica is often considered one of the most stable and progressive of the Central American nations.  Following a brief civil war in the 1940’s, Costa Rica introduced a new constitution which banned the country from possessing a standing military – making Costa Rica one of the few independent nations without national military forces.  No surprisingly, Costa Ricans have developed a reputation for being easy going, open-minded and welcoming to foreign guests.  We’re going to head to the Atlantic shores of Puerto Viejo to play some football, make some friends, and see if we can learn a thing or two!

  • Flag-Football Series hosted by the Puerto Viejo Selects
While a few months ago they may not have known too much about the sport of flag-football, the Puerto Viejo Selects have already starting training for their entrance into Fumble in the Jungle and the anticipation is building amongst local sports fans.  You’ll be guaranteed at least three games during the tournament in addition to some joint training sessions we will run with the local athletes.  This is a great opportunity to help spread some of your knowledge and passion for the game of Football!
  • White-Water Rafting
After departing San Jose for Puerto Viejo we’re going to take a break from the bus and raft down the world famous Pacuare River. Surrounded by walls of green trees and waterfalls, we’ll spend most of the day pumping up the adrenaline as we paddle down some of the best rapids Central America has to offer! If this sounds a bit too intense for you, you can always watch from the shores and meet up with the rafters at the bottom.
  • Surfing, fishing and chillaxing
In Costa Rica, the phrase ‘Pura Vida’ is something of an unwritten law.  Loosely translated, it holds that no matter what difficulties you face in life, you need to be grateful for what you have and keep on keeping on! Over the course of a week you will get to meet some local youth, we’ll spend some time hanging out, emerging ourselves in the cultural and exploring what exactly it means to live life ‘Pura Vida Style’.  If you don’t know how to surf…no problem, we’ll hook you up with some top class instructors to show you the waves!

The safety and wellbeing of Howe International Friendship League participants is of the utmost concern to us.  We regularly monitor the situation in all host destinations and maintain close contact with local community members.  If we feel that the security situation in a host country has deteriorated to the point that an event cannot continue, the HIFL will provide a full refund of all monies paid.

Our events always have a very friendly, easy-going vibe.  There won’t be much rough stuff.  That being said we recognize that injuries are always a possibility in any athletic sport.  For your wellbeing, trained first aid attendants will be present at all HIFL events.

All participants are required to show proof of sufficient travel insurance prior to embarking on their adventure.

How can we help you?

Please feel free to contact us with any question or concerns you might have regarding our events.

Sport has a unique way of forging cross-cultural connections where few previously existed. Join us to bring changing perspectives in the lives of remote communities.
