About the event

The Pyongyang Ice Hockey League 2019 is a sporting event utilizing a shared passion for hockey as a medium to develop friendship, trust and genuine cultural exchange between the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Canada, and the international community at large.  The exchange will have the added benefits of supporting the development of Hockey as well as sports programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the DPRK.

International hockey players and teams will participate in a series of games and practices hosted by the DPRK Men’s and Women’s national teams.  At the end of the week,  participants will have the opportunity to play in our world-renowned Friendship Game, which sees international and local players form teams to play side by side.

  • Ice hockey exhibition with the DPRK National Team
You will meet the DPRK ice hockey national team for training sessions and games throughout the week. The final game will see both international and local players join forces for a casual friendship game!
  • Site visits in Pyongyang and in Kaesong/Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)
After the games, we will undertake site visits to discover the most secretive nation on earth. You will be taken around Pyongyang, including Kim Il Sung Square, the Korean War Museum and the world famous Pyongyang Metro, which doubles as a nuclear bunker. You will also visit the Munsu indoor/outdoor water park, the city’s top restaurants and bars as well as its traditional breweries. The tour includes trips outside Pyongyang to Kaesong City and the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ), on the 38th parallel north, at the border with South Korea.
  • Opportunity to travel to Wonsan and the Masikryong Ski Resort
For the most adventurous, you will have the chance to travel to the world famous Masikryong Ski Resort. March is the perfect season to enjoy one of the most unknown ski areas in the world. This is a great chance to see what life in the DPRK is like outside the bustling capital – something few foreigners have the chance to do.

Safety

The safety and wellbeing of Howe International Friendship League participants is of the utmost concern to us.  We regularly monitor the situation in all host destinations and maintain close contact with local community members.  If we feel that the security situation in a host country has deteriorated to the point that an event cannot continue, the HIFL will provide a full refund of all monies paid.

Our events always have a very friendly, easy-going vibe.  There won’t be much rough stuff.  That being said we recognize that injuries are always a possibility in any athletic sport.  For your wellbeing, trained first aid attendants will be present at all HIFL events.

All participants are required to show proof of sufficient travel insurance prior to embarking on their adventure.

How can we help you?

Please feel free to contact us with any question or concern you might have regarding our events.

A Chance for Female Hockey Players to Make History

Our first annual event saw an international team compete against the DPRK men’s national team in Pyongyang, with the historical occasion being covered by major news publications including Reuters, the Korea Times, the Globe and Mail and many more.  While at the Pyongyang Ice Arena, we met with the DPRK women’s team, who eagerly watched all our events and practices.  We left determined to ensure they could participate in our next event, and have the same opportunities to engage and train with foreign players that is being afforded to their male counterparts.

In hopes of achieving our goal of bringing an international team of women to participate in the PIHL, we are calling on all female hockey players who believe in our mission to help us make it happen.  We would love to have you join us, but if you can’t make it this time, share the event with your friends and colleagues.  This is an incredible opportunity to go down in history as one of the first female hockey players to make the journey to the world’s most isolated country!
